D.C.-area forecast: Rain tapers to occasional lighter showers today. Snowflakes Tuesday night?

* Flood watch in effect Sunday morning *

A somewhat subjective rating of the day’s weather, on a scale of 0 to 10.

3/10: We’re waterlogged after the heavy overnight rain and stuck in the 40s. But just some occasional lighter showers late morning into evening shouldn’t be as soggy as it could have been.

  • Today: Steady rain tapers early, then scattered lighter showers. Highs: Mid-40s.
  • Tonight: A few rain/snow showers possible. Lows: Mid- to upper 30s.
  • Tomorrow: Partly sunny to mostly cloudy. Breezy. Highs: Mid- to upper 40s.

The steady, heavy rain winds down this morning, giving way to a chance of scattered lighter showers into the afternoon and evening. The next round of precipitation could come in the form of rain and snow showers late Tuesday into Wednesday. Otherwise, we’re noticeably cooler today through midweek, yet still near to a little above average, with daytime highs in the 40s and nighttime lows in the upper 20s to mid-30s.

Today (Sunday): The steady rain moves out from southwest to northeast around 7 a.m. to 9 a.m., leaving behind cloudy skies and the chance of occasional lighter showers into the afternoon and evening. The rain was heavy overnight, so there could be areas of flooding this morning near rivers, creeks, streams and in other low-lying areas and locations typically prone to flooding. Temperatures hover in the mid-40s but feel more like the 30s, with a breeze from the north occasionally gusting near 20 mph. Confidence: Medium

Ravens game: Today’s forecast for Baltimore is pretty much identical to the D.C. area. For those going to the Ravens game, that means cloudy skies, the chance of occasional light showers, temperatures in the mid- to low 40s, and a breeze gusting near 20 mph at times from the north.

Tonight: Mostly cloudy skies stick around with a few showers possible. Temperatures should stay above the freezing mark with lows dropping to the mid- to upper 30s, but some conversational snowflakes could mix in north and west of D.C. Winds pick up overnight with gusts from the northwest increasing to near 25 mph. Confidence: Medium

Tomorrow (Monday): The start of the workweek features partly sunny to mostly cloudy skies and winds gusting from the northwest near or past 30 mph at times. Daytime highs are near or just above average with highs in the mid- to upper 40s. Confidence: Medium-High

Tomorrow night: Partly cloudy with diminishing winds and lows in the upper 20s to low 30s. Confidence: Medium-High

Tuesday is partly sunny with highs in the mid-40s. Tuesday evening into Wednesday, a weak disturbance could bring occasional rain and snow showers. Temperatures could drop to within a couple of degrees of freezing Tuesday night, so we can’t rule out a light snow accumulation. The best chance would be on grassy areas north and west of D.C. Wednesday highs should reach near 40 to the mid-40s. There is still some model uncertainty, so be sure to stay tuned for updates. Confidence: Low

A daily assessment of the potential for at least 1 inch of snow in the next week, on a 0-10 scale.

1/10 (): A few wet snowflakes Sunday evening don’t look too exciting. Only slightly more potential for a light accumulation from potential snowflakes Tuesday night into Wednesday.
