(ST. JOSEPH, Mo.) College and high school students may see a delay with any financial aid from the FAFSA, with university financial aid departments saying that the Department of Education made some errors with the 2024-25 applications.
Financial aid departments across the U.S. are seeing delays with FAFSA applications as long as six months, setting thousands of students behind on their requested aid.
The Missouri Western State University Financial Aid Department states this is because the Department of Education is overhauling the current FAFSA system, but failed to troubleshoot any errors, which is resulting in massive delays with financial aid.
Haley Lindsey, MWSU’s Financial Aid director says,
“This is out of anybody’s control. It really lies in the hands of the Department of Education, and we’re not going to penalize the student for something that’s not their mistake. So just because you’re not getting it as soon as you think you should be, you’ll still be receiving it. That money is your money, if you qualify for a Pellgrant, that that’s your money. And like I said, it just may be delayed getting to you.”
Missouri Western’s Financial Aid Department recommends students remain patient and not worry if they’ve not received aid yet, and that they will work with any students affected by the delays by giving extensions and offering scholarships.
If you’re being affected by FAFSA’s delays, reach out to your financial aid department to see what you can do.
