Fast X star Jason Momoa has strongly hinted that the upcoming eleventh entry in The Fast Saga may not hit its 2025 release date.
During an interview with Variety, the actor — who plays the villainous Dante Reyes in Fast X — shared that he has not yet seen a script for the upcoming Fast & Furious 11, which is expected to pick up after the cliffhanger ending of its 2023 predecessor. “I put out my ideas and we’ll see where it goes. But that’s probably a ways off,” said Momoa, suggesting that Fast 11 is still in the development phase. “That’ll be fun to do. It’s fun playing the villain. It’s wonderful to play the villain,” he added.
Aquaman 2’s Jason Momoa Says He Hasn’t ‘Done Anything So Far’ in His Career
Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom lead actor Jason Momoa shares his two cents about his career, stating a rather surprising view he has about it.
Released in 2023, Fast X picks up a couple of years after the events of 2021’s F9, bringing Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) face-to-face with Dante Reyes, the son of Fast Five villain Hernan Reyes. After spending the last decade planning his revenge, Dante is ready to seek justice for his father, who died at the hands of Dom and his family in the 2011 action heist film.
While Fast X received mixed reviews from critics, Momoa’s performance was considered one of the movie’s highlights. Unfortunately, Fast X under-performed at the box office, grossing $714.6 million worldwide, which is usually nothing to be embarrassed about. However, Fast X cost $340 million before marketing, meaning that it is likely the movie turned a profit solely on its theatrical release.
Fast & Furious 11 Reportedly Getting Reworked
Fast X began production in April 2022, 11 months before opening in theaters, which is a typical turnaround timeframe for a big-budget blockbuster. However, this means that Fast 11 should be going into production by March to make its April 4, 2025 release date, which seems unlikely to happen based on Momoa’s comments. Further complicating matters is the recent report from insider Jeff Sneider stating that Universal is reworking the story and budget of Fast & Furious 11.
Fast & Furious 11 Secrets Already Revealed in Fast X, Director Teases
Fast & Furious franchise director Louis Leterrier claims key bits of the story in Fast & Furious 11 were buried in the dialogue during Fast X.
Now expected to hearken back to the early installments in the franchise, the “lean and mean” Fast 11 will do away with the more outlandish elements that have been added in recent installments in favor of a “back-to-basics” sequel revolving around “one last job.” The budget is not expected to be larger than $200 million. Furthermore, Fast 11 may no longer be a direct continuation of Fast X, with there being a strong possibility that a new villain will be introduced instead of bringing back Momoa’s Dante Reyes.
What Will Happen to Dante Reyes?
If Fast & Furious 11 does lessen its connection to Fast X, it’s been suggested that Dante Reyes’ storyline will be wrapped up in the upcoming Fast & Furious Luke Hobbs spinoff, which was announced in June 2023. Chris Morgan is penning the forthcoming spinoff, currently titled Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Reyes, strongly indicating that Momoa will be part of the entry. The film is expected to pick up from the post-credits scene of Fast X, which saw Dante leave a threatening message to Hobbs that he is next on his hit list.
Fast X is available to rent or own on digital platforms.
