Chicago philanthropist and socialite Bertha Palmer
The Glen Ellyn Historical Society presents author and historian Laurie Russell, author of the book, “The Remarkable Women Who Helped Build Chicago.”
It will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 23, at the Glen Ellyn History Center, 800 N. Main St.
Russell will explain that the stars on the Chicago flag represent four major events that changed Chicago forever: Fort Dearborn Massacre, the Chicago Fire of 1874, World’s Columbian Exposition, and Century of Progress World’s Fair.
Journalist and early civil rights leader Ida B. Wells
Her presentation examines how women responded to these events, and in the process built the city we know today.
Included are women who risked their lives in the Underground Railroad, built hospitals and schools, contributed to the arts, created progressive women’s club movements and more.
