Sam Raimi directed the three Spider-Man films between 2002 and 2007, and has just addressed the challenges a possible Spider-Man 4 could face. The trilogy is regarded as one of the most successful superhero series, and there has been recent hope for a possible continuation.
Speaking to The Wrap, Sam Raimi opened up about what plot a fourth Spider-Man could have. Raimi, Tobey Maguire, who played Peter Parker/ Spider-Man, and Sony Pictures parted ways over creative differences in 2010. Since then, two other actors have played the character, Andrew Garfield in his The Amazing Spider-Man series and Tom Holland in the MCU. All three shared the screen in 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home.
‘I Don’t Think We Need That’: Kirsten Dunst Responds to Spider-Man 4 Rumors
More than a decade since her last appearance as MJ, Marvel vet Kirsten Dunst reveals her thoughts about the recent Spider-Man 4 rumors.
When asked about a hypothetical storyline about a possible Spider-Man 4, Raimi confessed he didn’t really think about it. “I haven’t because I’d have to know what the next thing that character has to learn,” Raimi explained. “I’d have to talk with Tobey, and the writers, and really figure out what his personal growth for this episode would be.”
The director also noted that Peter’s personal growth would also determine the film’s villain. “I think if we were to make a fourth Spider-Man film, we’d probably have to figure out the journey that Tobey Maguire his character would be going on, and what obstacles he had to overcome to achieve that growth personally,” Raimi said. “And I hope that the villain would be chosen based on a representation of that obstacle.”
Raimi recently squashed the Spider-Man 4 rumors, noting, “I did read that, but I’m not actually working on it yet.” He continued that, “I haven’t talked to Tobey about it, but maybe Marvel has, or Columbia Pictures. But, I just worked with Marvel on a movie called Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. So, I’m on great terms with them. I’m sure I would hear about it if it was in the works. I think so. I don’t know.”

Sam Raimi Was Rumored to Helm the Upcoming Spider-Man Film
Since 2016’s Captain America: Civil War, the current Spider-Man is played by Tom Holland. The actor got his own Spider-Man series, with 2017’s Spider-Man: Homecoming, 2019’s Spider-Man: Far From Home, and 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home. A fourth installment is on the way, with Holland set to reprise his role alongside Zendaya as MJ. The first three films had Jon Watts at the helm, who is not expected to return for the fourth one.
Sam Raimi was rumored to be the favorite to helm the upcoming Spider-Man: No Way Home sequel, but there is no official confirmation at the moment. He is also reportedly the favorite to direct the upcoming installment of the Avengers series, Secret Wars. However, the director told the outlet he is not currently attached to any Marvel projects. “I don’t have any plans,” Raimi shared about a return to Marvel. “But I would love it!”
Raimi’s upcoming project is Boy Kills World, which he produced, and will hit theaters on April 26, 2024.
