MARION, Ind. — Aaliyah Wortman and Londyn Coleman were both 19, both from Marion and more like sisters than cousins.
“Those are two of the sweetest girls you would ever meet in your life,” said Wortman’s mother, Elizabeth Hawkins. “They had such positive energy. They were a good time, and as you can see, everyone loved them.”
The teens were shot to death, along with Spencer Lawson, Jr., a 27-year-old from Indianapolis, at an apartment complex near East 46th Street and North Post Road Friday night in Lawrence.
”We feel like they were targeted for some reason,” said Wortman’s aunt, Bonnie Ferguson. “We don’t know why. These kids did not deserve this.”
Lawrence Police agree that the triple killing was likely a targeted attack, though law enforcement did not offer any update on its investigation over the weekend.
Friends and family came together in Marion Sunday to honor the slain teens.
”It made me happy that they had such an impact on so many lives because not only are our hearts breaking and the community’s hearts have been breaking,” Hawkins said. ”For me, I just keep sitting thinking over and over, why were they there? Why did this happen? Why would someone want to hurt them? And there’s no reason in the world. Senseless. Just very senseless.”
”(Wortman) was supposed to graduate in four weeks, and she was looking forward to it,” Ferguson added.
Ferguson also had a message for the killer of her niece:
”Why would you want to do this? You’re just gonna get in trouble and get the death penalty or spend the rest of your life in jail. Why? Why does anybody want to do that?”
Hawkins was even more blunt when asked to address whomever took her daughter’s life.
”You’re disgusting trash, and I hope it catches up to you and that karma eats you up way worse than you ever did to them.”
Those with any information about the murders in Lawrence Friday night are urged to call Crime Stoppers at (317) 262-TIPS.
