New music star Tyla is canceling her first North American tour dates due to an injury that has worsened over time.
The South African singer, whose hit song “Water” has more than 500 million streams on Spotify, said Thursday that she is postponing her 2024 shows in the U.K. and Europe, and canceling all North American concerts to focus on her health. The European shows, which were scheduled to begin March 21 in Oslo, Norway, will. be rescheduled at a later date.
“As much as this is something I would rather have dealt with privately, it’s important that I share what I have to share with you today,” she wrote in a post on social media. “For the past year I’ve been silently suffering with an injury that has tragically worsened. I’ve seen doctors and specialists with high hopes but the pain has only become more agonizing as has the severity of the situation.
“I am absolutely heartbroken to have to say this but as of right now I won’t be able to proceed with the tour. In consulting with medical professionals it’s become increasingly clear that continuing any festival or tour dates would jeopardize my long-term health and safety.”
Tyla Laura Seethal, 22, did not elaborate on what the injury was, but added that she is especially “heartbroken” to cancel shows at a pivotal moment in her career. “Water,” released in July, went viral on TikTok and reached the top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100, prompting a remix featuring superstar rapper Travis Scott. She’s also leading a wave of popularity for Amapiano music, mixing pop and R&B with Afrobeats sounds.
Variety reports she announced her debut album in November, scheduled to be released on March 22, and recently released the follow-up singles “Truth or Dare” and “Butterflies.”
Tyla also won the first-ever Grammy Award for Best African Music Performance last month, plus was nominated for a BRIT Award, a South Train Music Award and two South African Music Awards.
She followed up Thursday’s announcement by thanking her fans (”Tygers”) for all their support, “all the joy, the laughter and the wins!”
Tyla had more than a dozen U.S. tour dates scheduled, according to Revolt, including her first ever appearance at the Coachella Music & Arts Festival in California. No New York stops were scheduled, but affected shows include stops in Philadelphia, Boston, and Toronto.
“For North American headline dates, your tickets will automatically be refunded, for all other territories you will be contacted by your ticket provider regarding options, please keep a look out for new dates and information,” Tyla said. “Thank you Tygers for understanding.”
