NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – The state’s Department of Agriculture is reminding New Mexicans to be safe when using pesticides. The push is part of National Pesticide Safety Education Month. According to the NMDA, people misread the labels of pesticide products, putting them and their families at risk of developing long-term illnesses.
The department says pesticides aren’t limited to insecticides and herbicides, they also include household disinfectants, insect repellents, and pool cleaners. The NMDA holds free pesticide disposal events each year. They say over the past 14 years, over 750,000 pounds of unwanted pesticides have been collected.
