Christian Bale and Robert Downey Jr. almost came face to face in The Dark Knight Trilogy.
Per Griffin Schiller on X, a new video has been shared of Robert Downey Jr. speaking to attendees at an American Cinematheque panel. The actor, who may be best known for playing Iron Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, revealed that he actually met with Christopher Nolan to potentially play the villain Scarecrow in Batman Begins. Downey recalled the meeting he had with Nolan, observing that while Nolan “was polite,” it didn’t “really seem like he’s leaning in on this interview.” Downey’s intuition was right, as he didn’t end up getting the part.
Batman: Caped Crusader Producer Clarifies Rumors of Kevin Conroy’s Casting
Bruce Timm has revealed whether Kevin Conroy recorded any voiceover work for Batman: Caped Crusader.
As fans know now, the role of Scarecrow would ultimately go to Cillian Murphy, and the actor would return as the villain in The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises. Meanwhile, Robert Downey Jr. would still find his own success in the realm of superhero movies soon enough. He landed the role of Tony Stark in Iron Man, a film that would come out three years after Batman Begins and launch what would become known as the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Downey’s run in the role would last until 2019, though there are rumors he could end up returning as Tony Stark once again in a new movie.
Christopher Nolan Later Found a Great Role for RDJ
While Batman Begins didn’t work out, Christopher Nolan would eventually cast Robert Downey Jr. for a role that could very well end up giving the actor his first Academy Award. For his role as Lewis Strauss in the movie, Downey is up for Best Supporting Actor, and many are expecting him to pick up the Oscar. It’s one of many major nominations for Oppenheimer at the Oscars. Ironically enough, both Nolan and Cillian Murphy are also up for Oscars for the same film, two decades after Downey was passed on for a role in Batman Begins.

“He’s one of our great actors, and though a generation of kids know what a great movie star he is, they’ve not seen his subtlety and brilliance,” Nolan has said of why he cast Downey as Strauss, per the L.A. Times. “I wanted to get him to do something completely different, to lose himself in another human being. When was the last time we’ve seen that? Chaplin? Directors are very aware of how talented Downey is, but because of his incredible energy that can punch through the screen, finding the right thing for him is difficult.”
Batman Begins is currently streaming on Max and Peacock, while Oppenheimer will be debuting on Peacock on Feb. 16.
