HARTFORD, Conn. (WTNH) – Connecticut leaders are putting a statewide focus on literacy to ensure students are reading well.
The state Department of Education partnered with UConn and community organizations on Thursday to host an educational forum on literacy at the Legislative Office Building in Hartford.
Educators and leaders facilitated a dialogue to highlight why literacy matters and to discuss future opportunities.
“I urge the parents of this day and age — turn off the damn smart phone and open a book. Turn off the phone and open a book and read to your child for that hour every evening. And not just read and have them learn to sound out, be able to verbalize the words but also understand and comprehend the words and talk,” Gov. Ned Lamont (D-Conn.) said.
Leaders and educators say reading proficiency is a powerful predictor of success.
