Steph Curry is expected to miss some time after spraining his right ankle against the Chicago Bulls on Thursday night, but the Golden State Warriors don’t anticipate a lengthy absence for the star guard, league sources told The Athletic.
Curry won’t play in the Warriors’ game against the San Antonio Spurs on Saturday night in San Francisco. Whether he returns at some point during their upcoming road trip — at San Antonio on Monday, at the Dallas Mavericks on Wednesday, at the Los Angeles Lakers on Saturday — is dependent on how the ankle responds to treatment and rest. There’s already been optimism on how it responded overnight.
Every game is consequential for the Warriors. They are the ninth seed in the West after Thursday’s loss to the Bulls, 1 1/2 games back of the Mavericks and tied with the Lakers, but still with hope of climbing out of the Play-In bracket entirely.
“No one is Steph Curry,” Golden State forward Draymond Green said. “That definitely will change things. But we know the sets that we like to get to with Chris (Paul) in the game and what he is great at.”
The Warriors are otherwise healthy and whole besides Curry. The expectation is that Paul will start in his place and Klay Thompson will continue to get chunk minutes off the bench. Moses Moody has done well in an increased role recently. The Warriors are 0-3 this season without Curry, but have the capability of handling the 13-50 Spurs the next two games, if they perform well.
The road games in Dallas and Los Angeles next week hold larger significance. Tiebreakers remain on the line against both teams. The Warriors face the Mavericks three more times and the Lakers twice more this season.
