A nine-month-old baby has undergone surgery after being stabbed in a shock attack at a Sydney shopping mall, with six victims confirmed dead.
A shocking video has shown the suspect armed with a large knife, while shoppers take cover in shops as one brave individual attempts to ward him off on an escalator.
The attacker, who is believed to be a 40-year-old male who was known to law enforcement, was also shot dead by a police inspector. While his identity has not been confirmed, police understand he was acting alone and the incident is not terror-related.
Over the course of his rampage, four women and one man were killed in the shopping centre, while another women died in hospital. Another eight people remain in hospital around Sydney.
One eyewitness reported seeing a baby with stab wounds, with the “terrified” mother attempting to console her child as they were taken to an ambulance. Other witnesses reported hearing gunshots as they hid inside stores, with one saying of the attacker: “He had a nice big blade on him. He looked like he was on a killing spree.”
Man confronted attacker with a bollard, footage suggests
One video show a man confronting the attacker with a bollard from the top of an escalator. Others showed people trying to move the injured to safety and help others hide in shops.
“I just saw the footage of the guy with the bollard, I reckon he’s the real hero here,” Bondi Rescue lifeguard Andy Reid, who was also shopping at the mall, told the Sydney Morning Herald. Mr Reid also attended to a woman who was bleeding on the fourth floor.

Shop supervisor saw four people stabbed on the ground
A supervisor of a luggage store, Yohan Francois Philip, said he also saw the bodies of four people on the ground, including two security guards.
He said that a woman approached the shop, “banged on the door and said, ‘let me in’” after they closed the doors to keep people safe.
“As I was letting her in, the perpetrator fell behind her with a knife and I saw him and so did the other customers in the store locked in with us and so we quickly pulled her in, locked the door, he got up and we realised he just stabbed two security guards,” he said.
“Then he ran across, to the corner part of the luggage store, to the premium section, and he stabbed a woman which I saw happen right in front of me.”
