USDOT grants $36.6M to improve Selma to Montgomery Trail

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WSFA) – The U.S. Department of Transportation has awarded Montgomery over $36 million to improve areas of the Selma to Montgomery Historic Trail, Rep. Terri Sewell announced Monday.

The funding comes from the DOT’s Neighborhood Access and Equity grant program. It will be used to develop a greenway trailhead and add ADA-accessible transportation options along the trail, a news release from Sewell’s office said.

“On the heels of the 59th anniversary of Bloody Sunday, we are thrilled to have secured major federal funding to improve our transportation infrastructure along the Selma to Montgomery Historic Trail,” said Sewell. “This $36 million federal investment will help us tell the story of the struggle for civil rights to more Americans. We are grateful to the Biden-Harris Administration for making it possible.”

Officials say the project will rework a building and a brownfield site into locations for microgrids and charging stations for the public and public transit. It will also upgrade the Fairview Transfer Station to house smart benches, Wi-Fi nodes, wayfinding kiosks, and workforce micro-transit hub.

The creation of the Selma to Montgomery National Historic Trail was authorized by Congress in 1996 to commemorate the events, people, and route of the 1965 Voting Rights March.
