HABD awarded $180,000 from HUD, VA to house homeless veterans

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – Some veterans without homes in the Birmingham area will soon have a safe place to sleep thanks to funding from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

They recently awarded nearly $14 million nationwide and $600,000 to programs across the state.

The Housing Authority of the Birmingham District (HABD) is getting $180,000 or 28 vouchers which will be distributed to 28 veterans without homes to help get a roof over their head. HABD Chief of Policy Seth Embry said each voucher is given to a homeless veteran who then uses it to pay for housing.

Right now, they have 331 vouchers. The 28 new ones brings that total to 359 veterans that they’re helping house in our city. Embry says this is a chance to serve the men and women who put their own lives on the line serving us.

“It will absolutely be life-changing,” says Embry, “These are individuals who are homeless and so that means they don’t have a place that’s safe that’s their own to rest their head. They don’t have something that is their own. To be able to provide this resource, it’s a real honor for us to be able to do that.”

If you are a veteran in need of housing or you know a veteran who can benefit from these vouchers, HABD says they work closely with the VA Medical Center to find veterans to participate in this program.
